The degree of raising depends on laser settings, leather type, and moisture content.
  4. Depth Control (Raster Engraving): For filling larger areas or creating gradients, the laser works in a raster mode (like an inkjet printer). By varying the laser’s power as it scans back and forth, based on a grayscale image, it removes more material in darker areas (creating deeper depressions) and less in lighter areas (creating shallower depressions or just raising the surrounding rim). This variation in ablation depth directly translates into visible and tactile height differences, creating the stunning 3D embossed effect.

Chrome-tanned leathers can work but may produce less dramatic raising and sometimes require more careful parameter tuning. Always test!
  2. Moisture Content: Slightly dampening vegetable-tanned leather (casing) before lasering, much like traditional tooling, can significantly enhance the embossing effect, allowing for deeper, cleaner definition and more pronounced raising. This requires experimentation.
  3. Parameter Mastery: Finding the perfect balance of power, speed, frequency, and resolution (PPI) is crucial. Too much power burns; too little creates weak effects. Testing on scrap pieces from the same hide is non-negotiable.
  4. Artwork Preparation: Clean vector lines are essential for sharp raised borders. For raster depth effects, high-resolution grayscale images with good contrast work best. Understanding how different shades translate to depth is key.
