  • Characteristics of Glass: Glass responds differently to CO2 lasers, and each piece may react slightly differently. Laser engraving on glass creates micro-fractures, resulting in a frosted appearance.

Choosing the Right Laser Engraver

  • CO2 Laser Engravers: These are the most effective for glass engraving, offering the precision and power needed for clean results. They are suitable for most glass engraving projects.
  • Diode Laser Engravers: These may require additional materials like marking paste or spray to engrave glass. For instance, Brilliance Laser Inks can be used with diode lasers to achieve clear and professional results on glass.

Preparing the Glass Surface

  • DPI (Dots Per Inch): Use a resolution of 300-600 DPI for frosted, detailed designs. Higher DPI may cause excessive heat and cracking. A lower resolution or DPI (e.g., 300 DPI) can produce a better frosting effect since the engraved dots are spaced apart.
  • Focus: Ensure the laser beam is properly focused for consistent engraving. Slightly defocusing the laser can result in softer engraving impacts.

Enhancing the Engraving Process

  • Design Considerations: Ensure the design is vector-based or high-resolution for crisp details. Avoid extremely fine lines that may become unclear. For color-filled engravings, fill the engraved areas with paint or ink after engraving to achieve better contrast.
  • Engraving Techniques: Adjust power settings to achieve a uniform frosted appearance. Instead of one heavy pass, use multiple light passes to prevent cracking. Utilize varying speed settings to create different shading effects within the same engraving.

Post-Engraving Cleanup and Polishing

  • Clean the Glass: After engraving, rinse the glass with water to remove residue. Use a soft cloth and glass cleaner to wipe the surface clean, revealing the crisp, permanent mark beneath.
  • Polish the Glass: If there are rough edges, use glass polish or a mild abrasive to smooth them and enhance the finish.
